About the project

The maps that we usually see try to offer the most objective possible view of the territory. However, when you ask a passer-by for directions, you often get an answer based on the subjective human perception of the territory: "after the bridge, turn right and continue straight on until the house with a rounded roof." Illustrators could transcribe this subjectivity onto maps located in the Grand Paris Express station exits (neighbourhood maps).
Nevertheless, this manual process is long, of little value in terms of data, and not very compatible with the frequent updates necessary in districts where the arrival of a station modifies the Local Urbanism Plan. By interviewing numerous experts specialised in mapping, open source, urban planning and public transport operations, Figs was able to write the specifications for the entire process, enabling the production of these maps which are open source and partly based on crowd-sourcing.
